Mary-Claire KingMary-Claire King, PBK Senator and University of Washington Professor, Receives 2014 Lasker Award

One of the recipients of the prestigious 2014 Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation Award (also referred to as the American Nobel) is UW Professor Mary-Claire King for her contribution to medical science and human rights. In 2013, she received the 100,000 Paul Ehrlich/Ludwig Darmstaedter Prize from the Federal Republic of Germany. She has proved that there is a genetic predisposition to breast cancer. In particular, she identified the DNA region that contains the BRCA1 gene, where mutation heightens the risk of developing breast cancer. It then became possible to isolate the gene, allowing affected women (and men) to be monitored. Dr. King is a professor in the departments of Genomic Sciences and Medicine at the University of Washington and is one of the three Phi Beta Kappa Senators from this university.
