Karrin KlotzBoard member Karrin Klotz, who is also chair of the High School Outreach Program, was recently elected to the Board of Directors of Washington Women Lawyers, and also became its Co-VP for Membership.  Washington Women Lawyers is a statewide organization of women attorneys with the principal purposes of furthering the full integration of women into the legal profession, promoting equal rights and opportunities for women, and preventing discrimination against them.  Through the combined resources of a statewide organization and a network of local chapters, Washington Women Lawyers offers programming and support for women lawyers throughout the state.

Ms. Klotzís first action on behalf of the organization involved testifying before the King County Executive Council on recent proposed budget cuts. One such proposed cut is to close the King County Maleng Regional Justice Center Law Library in Kent.  The Washington Women Lawyers joined with several Washington minority bar associations in presenting a joint letter to the Council protesting this proposal, in that many pro se litigants and minority solo practitioners are unable to afford expensive online research and instead rely on the law library to do the legal research necessary to prepare their cases, and to do their jobs on behalf of their clients.  The Honorable Mary I. Yu of the King County Superior Court introduced the various representatives from the sponsoring associations, and Ms. Klotz presented her testimony on the effects of the proposed closure on women attorneys in the state, many of whom are solo practitioners.  This closure, Ms. Klotz observed, is a particularly critical issue during these economically difficult times.
